Lucania: New Routes, Deep Snow

Through deep snow, the two spent the weekend moving all supplies & camp up to the top of the ridge at the base of the mountain. The super high winds from the days prior had made the cache of food and supplies that they had buried the previous day hardly visible. They passed their cache, having to return to retrieve it the next day. Because of the initial plan to climb Mt. Lucania, the duo was largely unfamiliar with the route up Steele. They unknowingly took the long way around, bummed as they reached a beautiful glacier that they could have cruised down on skis.

Despite the heavy loads, calf cramps and difficult route, the team is in great spirits, nestled in the most idyllic campsite flanked by Mt. Logan and all the greats of the St. Elias Mountains. With endless peaks embracing them in the frigid winter ice-scape, the two will remain here for the next two nights as they make their way up Mt. Steele, carrying heavy loads up during the days. Keep plugged in here as we hear more from the Yukon.
